More About Newport RI - Editor's Tips - Weather Maps & Dining

When to go?
The population in Newport swells in the summer heat as vacationers head to the beach. In autumn, the crowds dwindle, but reason to visit does not. The fall foliage display in Newport is worthy of a trip, and you will find yourself enjoying the autumnal activities without the stuffed streets. Take note: if you go during the off-season in winter, some museums and attractions may be closed until the weather becomes more favorable.

Where to stay?
The real question in Newport is whether you want to stay right on the beach or closer to the shops and restaurants in the downtown area. Otherwise, if you don't mind being a few miles from the action, head North of the city to Middletown where you can find more affordable motels and b&bs. To truly do "the City by the Sea" right, stay in a Victorian inn or guesthouse with a view of Narragansett Bay.

What to do?
Take a Newport history tour and walk through several of the well-preserved mansions. Most are within walking distance of each other, and all offer guided tours. From there, head for the "Cliff Walk;" with the Atlantic on one side and the mansions on the other, the views are fantastic. If all the walking has you tired, lounge on Easton's, Bailey's or Gooseberry Beaches. All of the beaches in Newport are open to the public, despite many being privately owned.
