Athens Greece Vacation Travel

More About Athens - Editor's Tips - Weather Maps & Dining

When to go?
The 2004 Olympics meant a hotel-building boom for Athens, so you should not have a problem finding a room here year-round. Summer is Athens' busiest season, with hot August bringing the heaviest tourist traffic. Between November and February, the Greek oracles often predict rain and chills. Try October or between March and May for a temperate Greek vacation.

Where to stay?
If you can afford a splurge, why not book a room with an Acropolis view? There are plenty of four and five star accommodations for those who can grease the wheels of their Grecian journey. Lots of tourists like to stay in Syntagma Square for convenience or in Plaka for its old world charm. Modernists will appreciate the nouveau hotel jewels in Kifissia and Kolonaki. For decades, Omonia Square has been a mainstay of affordable hotels; before booking here and in Plaka, be sure ask about your hotel's amenities or check online to read recent reviews from fellow travelers.

What to do?
To tap into the marble majesty of classical civilization, make an early morning pilgrimage to the Acropolis. After a charming lunch at a Plaka taverna, head south in your rental car and catch the stunning sunsets at the Temple of Poseidon, set atop the Adriatic Sea. When you're oh-so thirsty for ouzo, the Psirri neighborhood offers a vibrant nightlife. And once you've seen your fill of ancient and Islamic art, do reward yourself with a shopping spree in Kolonaki.
