More About Austin Texas - Editor's Tips - Weather Maps & Dining

When to go?
Spring is idyllic in Austin, with averages in the 70's and a myriad of activities from the famous "South by Southwest Music and Media Festival" to the bluebonnet wildflowers carpeting much of the state - both in March. Beware, however: though there are more hotels now than in the recent past, attendees to music festivals, University of Texas football games, and State Congress sessions (held during the first half of odd years) tend to occupy many of the rooms, so be sure to book your accommodations well in advance. Avoid Austin in summer - extremely high heat and humidity drain the excitement that surrounds the city.

Where to stay?
Experience the essence of Austin and stay in the Town Lake area (encompassing the historic district and South Congress area). Boutique hotels close to Sixth Street provide easy access to the music scene, while the major chain hotels lining I-35 just outside the town are convenient to the airport and open stretches of springtime wildflower patches lining the highways. For a more personal touch, stay in one of the many quaint B&Bs that have opened up around town. Some more affordable options exist near the University of Texas. At the other extreme, pamper yourself at the Lake Austin Spa Resort just outside town on Lake Austin.

What to do?
You may come for the vibrant music and be surprised to find so many other activities and things to do in Austin - from vintage clothes shopping to nature hikes, and historical tours to technology conventions. The city provides free bus service downtown ('Dillo lines), which whisk you from one destination to the next. But no vacation to Austin would be complete without attending a concert on Sixth Street or Red River Street - Austin is, after all, the "live music capital of the world." For the adventurous at heart, head to Congress Avenue Bridge, where at dusk, the country's largest urban colony of bats take flight.
