Vienna, Austria Vacation Travel

More About Vienna - Editor's Tips - Weather Maps & Dining

When to go?
Vienna teems with tourists in the summer, particularly in July and August for the music festival. Vienna bustles in September, so for a less crowded vacation, aim for April or May. In winter, a live serenade by the Vienna Boys Choir - or shopping at the Viennese Christmas market - might make your frosty trip worthwhile.

Where to stay?
The former seat of the Austrian empire offers plenty of extravagant hotels fit for royalty - as well as their servants! Most tourists stay near the Innere Stadt (near the palace, St. Stephens Cathedral and the shopping district) or the Ringstrasse (near many museums and concert venues). Austrian hostels and pensions are known for their cleanliness, so feel free to save your euros. Even if you stay in the city, venture one day into the suburbs for a meal at a Heurigen, a traditional Viennese outdoor wine tavern.

What to do?
Step into the imperial past through a tour of the Hapsburgs Hofburg Palace or Schonbrunn Castle. Art lovers will be wowed by the Kunsthistorisches Museums vast collection, while the Belvedere is home to the beloved works of Gustav Klimt. Locals will insist that you try the apple strudel mit schlag (with whipped cream) at Demel, once the confectioner to the king. Children will surely delight at the famed Ferris Wheel of Prater. Lastly, offer your reverences to Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and Strauss at Zentralfriedhof, one of the largest cemeteries in the world.
