Amsterdam The Netherlands Vacation Travel

More About Amsterdam - Editor's Tips - Weather Maps & Dining

When to go?
The peak tourism season begins with the tulip bloom in mid-April and peaks in July and August, with good weather, high prices and long lines. Shoulder seasons can be equally pleasant, while hotels and museums are far less crowded. Whenever you go, bring a small umbrella and layer your clothing. Rain and fog are always a possibility.

Where to stay?
For the best selection, reserve your hotel several months in advance, particularly for visits in July and August. The big name hotels are concentrated around Central Station and Dam Square. For a quieter setting, look for hotels in the Museum District in South Amersterdam. The Vodelpark and Jordaan areas are also good options for charming, small hotels.

What to do?
In Amsterdam, traveling between attractions is part of the fun. The museum canal cruise is a lovely way to visit museums. Bicycle rentals are also very popular and convenient, but beware, bike theft is a problem. If you are in Amsterdam over the weekend, it is worth your time to catch a bit of the local scene - cycle over to Nieuwe Markt, where on Saturday you will find a vegetable market, and on Sunday, antiques are sold.
