More About Milan Italy - Editor's Tips - Weather Maps & Dining

When to go?
Most people visit Milan for shopping and business, so weather is not so much of a concern. That's fortunate, because it can get uncomfortably hot during the summer and wet and foggy in the winter. On the other hand, fashion show weeks, typically occurring in March and October, are a factor. Even if you could find an available hotel room during fashion weeks, you might not want to pay the price, which becomes exorbitant during these periods. Don't be discouraged, you can enjoy Milan's high energy any time of year.

Where to stay?
The crown jewels of Milan are the 700 year old Duomo and the Galleria Vittoria Emanuel, so it's a treat to stay at a hotel within walking distance. For shopping enthusiasts, the Brera / Magtenta neighborhood is another good choice. As in many European cities, budget accommodations can be found in the area of the central train station.

What to do?
If you're a shopping enthusiast, focus on the the Golden Quadrangle of fashion roughly defined by Via Manzoni, Corso Venezia, Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga. Don't miss the original Prada store, founded in Milan in 1913. At the end of the day, it's a Milan tradition to drop into a local bar for an aperitivo, a refreshing beverage along with delicious (free!) appetizers. For the truly civilized evening experience, plan ahead at least two months and reserve tickets for Milan's world renowned and recently renovated Opera, Teatro alla Scala.
