Atlantic City New Jersey Vacation Travel

More About Atlantic City - Editor's Tips - Weather Maps & Dining

When to go?
The casino hotels and the smaller lodgings fill up on the weekends throughout the year and even during the week if there is a major event in town. The beaches, boardwalk and other outdoor activities "down the Shore" are what built Atlantic City, but the casinos are what keep it open in the winter, so families should plan to go in the warmer months, but gamblers can find fun all year long. Be sure to check well in advance to see what events are going to fill up the hotels.

Where to stay?
Room rates at casinos and smaller hotels fluctuate greatly from day to day and week to week, again depending on the events calendar. To get the full Atlantic City experience, adults should stay at one of the big resort/casinos. Most of the casinos are not kid-friendly, but will abide them. Families would be better served to find a more affordable hotel or motel close to the boardwalk where the kids can have fun, too. There are also bed and breakfast style lodgings up and down the shore for a more intimate experience.

What to do?
Atlantic City itself is primarily aimed at emulating the Vegas experience, a-la extravagant stage shows and opulent casino gambling, and the big names like Taj Mahal, Caesar's and Tropicana do a great job. Just a short drive away, picturesque boutique towns such as Cape May and Spring Lake offer beaches and small-town experiences without the hustle and flash of the casinos. Shopping is great along the boardwalk but there are great deals to be had at The Walk, the new outlets at Michigan and Artic Aves.
