When to go? You can't avoid the heat. But you can visit Dubai at its "coolest" time, October to March. Nights can actually turn chilly. If you go any other time of the year, expect to be forced inside by the intense dry heat and blinding brightness. The high can reach 41C/108F in summer.

Where to stay? The city center gets some negative reviews, so a beach hotel is the best bet all around. Then it's just a matter of comparing perks - spas, shopping, sports facilities, night clubs, hip-factor. Make sure you like the hotel bar, because there are very few in town.

What to do? It's hard to ignore the main reason tourists flock to Dubai - the shopping opportunities for luxury goods. But don't let the sun fry your more enlightened side. You're in the Arabian desert, one of the oldest parts of the world. Get out and see it, You can go to the beach anywhere, but a desert safari? A camel farm? Traversing sand dunes? Little known souk bazaars, mosques and Bedouin villages?
