The largest national park in the United States, Wrangel St. Elias National Park, in Alaska, is actually larger than nine individual U.S. states! This park has no entrance stations or gates, and it never closes. Within the park you can set up camp just about anywhere you like at no charge. Aside from a variety of beautiful Alaskan scenery and wildlife, the park contains an impressive set of icefields, glaciers, and mountain peaks over 16,000 ft, including Mt. Wrangell at 18,008 ft. That said, the only roads going through the park are gravel; any trails that exist are not officially maintained. People do backpack in the park, and the National Park Service has a list of a number of first-come first-serve cabins, most of which you can fly to. However, even if you decide not to stay in the park itself, you can still get in a good visit. Flightseeing is has become a very popular way to experience Wrangel St. Elias National Park. Flights generally cost about $1 US per minute. But you can see a lot of beautiful scenery in an hour.
