Voyaguers National Park is located along the northern border of Minnesota. Unlike many other national parks, where the main access is by car or by foot, the primary access to Voyageurs National Park is via water. That is because the park's main features are thousands of acres of pristine, peaceful lakes, surrounded by marshes and thick forests. This region, among others, was prime hunting and bartering territory for voyageurs - French fur traders of the 1600s and 1700s. As in times past, most visitors to the area today travel by canoe .Kayaking is also popular. Some people rent houseboats. They, along with the canoists and kayakers staying overnight get permits for the park's campsites. However, Kettle Falls Hotel, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, is inside the park boundaries and is reachable by boat. This hotel is open for business during the summer. It is one of the few places in the contiental United States where you look south into Canada.
