Stowe Vermont Vacation Travel |
When to go? It depends on what you want to do: skiing and snowboarding in the winter, "leafing" in the fall, or hiking and camping in the summer. The busiest season (with the highest room rates) is early to mid fall. That's when vacationers in search of autumn colors congest most of the state, but the vibrant mountain views are worth the crowds. "Mud Season" closes many properties in November and late spring so plan your vacation to Stowe at other times during the year.

Where to stay? Mountain Rd. (Vermont Rte 108) connects the town of Stowe to Mount Mansfield and the Stowe ski area. The road is lined with a variety of hotels, motels and inns, and there are also over sixty lodging establishments in Stowe itself. Traffic can be a problem, but a free trolley runs along Mountain Rd. so unpack the car, leave it in the lot, and save time and trouble.

What to do? In winter, Stowe stands out as a cross-country skiing destination with over 100 miles of trails, in addition to its downhill skiing areas around Vermont's highest peak, Mt. Mansfield. However if you visit Stowe during the summer, the Stowe gondola will take explorers within a mile and a half of the summit for some unforgettable views. Most of the grocery stores and gift shops sell local maple syrup, but check roadside stands for the best product.
