When to go? Given that this Caribbean island is divided between the French and the Dutch, perhaps you want to head to St. Martin / St. Maarten when you're seeking a 3-for-1 cultural dip. This vacation destination is most popular from December through April. The island is in the middle of the tropical hurricane storm belt, so check your almanac before heading here between June and November.

Where to stay? There are so many lodging options on this island that where you stay will mostly depend on your budget. Many visitors rent a luxury villa on the more European side of St. Martin; four star resorts and three star hotels also abound along its coasts. Dutch St. Maarten is very developed and offers endless condo / apartments as well as big-name hotels.

What to do? On Wednesdays and Saturdays mornings, head to Marigot for a French croissant, then ramble through the local market of tropical fruits and homegrown produce. For an epicurean evening, reserve a table at any of Grand Case's top restaurants. The Dutch side around Maho is where the party is at, with casinos, bars and plenty of nightclubs. For daytime diversions besides beaches and water sports, catch a ferry to Anguilla, St. Barts or Saba from Marigot's marina.
