When to go? In South Padre Island, beach weather extends from late March all the way through early November. Average highs in the summer are just below 90 and nearly 70 in the winter. There are sports and activities available all year (however the water park closes in winter) in this true resort town. Beware the ides of March: Spring-breakers take over the town from mid-March into April.

Where to stay? There are condos, bungalows, hotels, motels, and campgrounds lining the 25 miles of beach that surround South Padre Island. Room rates are lowest in the winter and vary widely from month to month. If you are going in late summer, ask your lodging about hurricane policies. Stay on the Laguna side for spectacular sunset views.

What to do? Fishing is great in Laguna Madre or ocean-side, both on and offshore. Parking at the beach is inexpensive, and all beaches are public. Aside from great beach activities, year-round wind surfing, bird and sea turtle watching are favorites on South Padre. Most restaurants have outdoor seating, and if your day's fishing has gone well, bring your catch along; many local restaurants will cook it for you.
