More About Sonoma Valley - Editor's Tips - Weather Maps & Dining |

When to go? The Sonoma Valley Wine Country sparkles in September and October, featuring the best weather of the year, a bustling grape harvest and relatively few tourists. Spring and summer are great too, but think twice before going in January and February when rain can put a damper on the wine-country lifestyle.

Where to stay? Sonoma's historic town square is the epicenter of hotels, inns and BandB's with easy access to restaurants, historic sites and winery tasting rooms. For a vineyard setting, the northern end of Sonoma Valley can't be beat. The Carneros Region to the South is a great base for visiting neighboring Napa Valley, but the area can be cold and windy.

What to do? Winery tasting rooms are scattered up and down Sonoma Valley. The Visitors Bureau on Sonoma Plaza has free maps and directions. After sampling, pick up a bottle of wine at your favorite winery, and enjoy a "spontaneous" picnic along the way. (Sonoma Plaza and Jack London State Park are favorites.) Spend at least one evening dining and strolling around Sonoma's historic town square, which is filled with quaint wine shops, charming boutiques and great local restaurants.
