Puerto Rico Vacation Travel

More About Puerto Rico - Editor's Tips - Weather Maps & Dining

When to go?
Because Puerto Rico offers such easy access from the States, the island gets booked way in advance for most American holidays. Visit in the summer and you might get some rain, but it is generally temperate and you'll save a bunch of money too. Although Puerto Rico is in the hurricane belt, the storms are usually predicted far in advance.

Where to stay?
Barely ten minutes from San Juan's airport, Isla Verde boasts a stretch of name-brand hotels and small motels along a great stretch of beach. Four and five star resorts are found by Las Croabas and Dorado. On the Southwest shore, hotels on Playa del Ponce offer less crowded beaches and exposure to a not-so-touristy Puerto Rico. If you're in search of a quiet vacation with natural beauty, the offshore islands of Culebra and Vieques are charming getaways. No matter where you stay, renting a house or subletting a furnished apartment is your most cost-conscious choice for lodging.

What to do?
First you need to relax, and that's where the beaches come in. Next, rent a car and begin exploring - Puerto Rico has so much to offer beyond your hotel's perimeters. In Old San Juan, shop 'til you drop, dine well, then stay out late for the Latin jazz and salsa scene. Outdoor types can hike El Yunque, tour the Rio Camuy caves and underground river, take surfing lessons in Rincon, and witness the magical phosphorescent bay in La Parguera.
