Paris France Vacation Travel

More About Paris - Editor's Tips - Weather Maps & Dining

When to go?
Springtime in Paris? Do not rush to get there in April when it frequently rains. The weather improves in May and is nearly perfect by June. August presents a different set of challenges. Parisians leave en masse for annual holiday in late July and August, and Paris is hollow without them. Add a swarm of student tourists, sweltering heat, and a hotel without air conditioning, and you might wish you had visited at a different time. Things return to normal in autumn, which many feel is the best time to visit Paris. You will need to bundle up to stay warm in Paris November through March , but you will not be fighting the crowds.

Where to stay?
The Paris hotel scene is roughly split along the banks of the River Seine, which divides the city both geographically and culturally. Right Bank hotels tend to be more chic and luxurious, with great access to many of the high cultural attractions of Paris, including the Louvre and Opera. The Left Bank tends to be more bohemian and less expensive, with a rich street life of cafes and bookstores. For longer stays, consider renting an apartment which can now be arranged online quite easily.

What to do?
If you have never visited Paris before, get oriented with an invigorating walk from the Arc de Triomphe to the Notre Dame Cathedral, via the Tuileries Gardens. It is a 2 hour walk, plus time for shopping and cafe treats. If you are planning to visit museums, consider purchasing a Carte Musees et Monuments which not only gives you entry into over 70 museums and monuments, but also allows you to skip long ticket lines. For a free and truly inspirational experience, slide into a pew at a grand cathedral and listen to a recital.
