When to go? So you're heading to wine country! When considering the best time to visit Mendocino, just pick your pairing: perhaps the Crab and Wine Festival tempts your palate? Or in March, take your pick of two Wine and Whales Festivals, where you can catch nature's massive aquatic mammals in migration - and enjoy tastings at local art galleries. September boasts the family-friendly County Fair plus WineSong, a tribute to vino set in the region's botanical gardens. For a more intimate winery experience, head to Hopland for their "Passport" sampling event in October.

Where to stay? Most of the lodging options in Mendocino are smaller hotels, inns and bed & breakfasts. For a picturesque stay, pick a hotel on the Coast and ask for an "ocean view." If your priority is proximity to nature and hiking, then try the South Coast or opt for a campground (a few even have hot showers). If you're roving for romance, indulge in spa package. Or if your true love is golf, book your stay in Little River.

What to do? When deciding which vintner to visit, just pick your favorite grape and ask locals "who's made a good Pinot/Zinfandel/Merlot recently?" In Mendocino, you'll find plenty of redwoods to seek refuge in, as well as two state parks and one state forest for excellent hiking and mountain biking. For a unique daytrip, head to Ukiah for its natural mineral baths (aka "warm springs"). At the end of your day, be sure to reward yourself with a sumptuous dinner at one of the area's many gourmet restaurants.
