When to go? When you want to go to Paris but it's the cold and rainy there, head to Martinique. The island's veritable French culture and Caribbean warmth offers the best of both worlds. To ensure sunny rays, visit between November and June. During July through October, you're likely to catch better rates but some rainfall - and at worst, a tropical storm or hurricane.

Where to stay? On Martinique, you'll find plenty of upscale hotels like Sofitel and resort giants like Club Med. Yet there are also plantation inns and smaller inns that can lend Caribbean Creole flavor to your stay. Les Trois-Ilets peninsula, Sainte Luce, Diamant, Le François are some of the most popular lodging locations.

What to do? Martinique is full of tropical beauty - decked out in lush flowers, hovering hummingbirds and seemingly bejeweled butterflies. If you're seeking water sports, "pas de problème" (no problem!): Martinique offers diving, sailing, deep sea fishing, parasailing, jet skiing and windsurfing. Some say you're better received in Martinique if you parlez basic Français, but with all the trés chic shopping, you can be sure American Express is widely spoken here.
