Madain Saleh is an ancient city located in northwest Saudi Arabia. In ancient times the city was inhabited by Nabateans and was known as Hegra. It is considered second only to the famous Petra in Jordan in terms of Nabataean architectural remains. The archeological site features spectacular rock tombs with inscriptions dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. All the remaining architectural elements are dated to the period of the Thamudi and Lihyan civilizations, between the 1st millennium BC and the second century AD. In 2008, UNESCO proclaimed Madain Saleh as a site of patrimony, becoming the first World Heritage Site in Suadia Arabia. Madain Saleh is one of the little known tourist jewels of Saudi Arabia.
