Hong Kong Vacation Travel |
When to go? Spring and fall are popular times to visit Hong Kong as temperatures are pleasant, however as Hong Kong becomes a larger tourist destination (for the Chinese in particular), typhoon season (June through September) is the only relatively low season as it frequently rains and humidity hovers between 90-100%. The Chinese New Year, festivals such as the Tuen Ng (Dragon Boat) Festival, and some conventions / trade shows are also especially crowded times to take a Hong Kong vacation.

Where to stay? Hong Kong proper is split by Victoria Harbor: to the North is the Kowloon Peninsula, and to the South is Hong Kong Island. Tsim Sha Tsui is the primary tourist area at the Southern tip of the Kowloon Peninsula with impressive views across the harbor to the skyline of Hong Kong Island. Here is where you can find luxury four and five star hotels, as well as the world-renowned "Golden Mile" shopping district. Across the harbor, Central is the primary financial business district, and with the exception of the zestful Lan Kwai Fong nightlife, it is typically quieter here in the evenings than elsewhere in Hong Kong.

What to do? Pick up an Octopus Card either at the airport or at any MTR station (their subway). It will allow you to travel on all forms of public transit in Hong Kong. After settling into your hotel in Hong Kong, explore the city and shop at Lane Crawford and surrounding boutique designer shops or by heading to the Wanchai district for the food, bars and nightlife. Time permitting, take day trips out of the city to visit Victoria Peak via the famous Peak Tram or the Po Lin Monastery where you will find the world's largest outdoor statue of Buddha. Don't forget Disneyland Hong Kong which opened in September, 2005!
