Gore Canyon is a steep and rugged canyon on the upper Colorado River in southwestern Colorado famous for its wild class V whitewater rafting. The canyon is inaccessible by car though the California Zephyr Amtrak passenger train passes through it. Gore Canyon was first rafted in the 1970s, and today, expert kayakers frequent the river. The Gore Canyon Whitewater Festival is held every year on the third Saturday of August and is also the host of the US National White Water Rafting Championship. Most outfitters agree that this whitewater is the wildest commercially available whitewater rafting in the state of Colorado, and perhaps in the nation.
