When to go?
Glaciers during the last ice age flattened most of the Midwestern United States, but somehow entirely missed Galena, tucked away into Illinois' Northwest corner. The results are breathtaking hills and valleys perfect for visiting during autumn to view the spectacular fall colors.

Looking to escape Chicago for a romantic or relaxing weekend? Take a road trip back in time to Galena and stay at one of the historic B&Bs or hotels. Be sure to book your accommodation in advance; if you go over a weekend, many guest houses and B&Bs require two night minimums, and not all are equipped with the same amenities that you might expect.

What to do?
Most of this mining boomtown's charm remains preserved today with over 85% of the buildings in the town center designated as a National Historic District. Take a trolley tour to experience the quaint streets of yesteryear. Afterwards, jump in the car and go for a scenic drive along the winding roads between Galena and Warren on the Stagecoach Trail.
