When to go? Summer is high season in the capital of Scotland, with the Edinburgh Festival in August creating peak demand. For good weather and less crowds, try May, September (after the festival ends) or October. Winter in Edinburgh is windy and frosty, but Christmas at The Castle and off-peak prices might be reason enough to brave the cold.

Where to stay? The Castle divides the city into East and West Edinburgh; all in all, most places to stay are centrally located for tourists. Whether your priority is WiFi and espresso or gay-friendly lodging, there are endless Bed and Breakfasts to accommodate your accommodation needs. There are also a handful of hot boutique hotels here, like the Bonham and the Howard. World-renowned rooms await you on Prince Street - and of course, most major hotel chains boast outposts in this second-largest city in Scotland.

What to do? Storm the castle! The 5,000 year old Edinburgh Castle is full of treasures: perhaps the largest cannon you will ever see, the National War Museum and the Stone of Destiny (take the audio tour to hear the full story). For a panoramic view of Edinburgh, hike to Arthurs Seat from Holyrood Palace. To savor a meal with a view, head to the Tower Restaurant in the Museum of Scotland - and do not skip the pudding menu! Lastly, whether you prefer your Scotch served at a traditional pub or trendy club, hit St.George Street.
