Coastal Carolinas Vacation Travel

When to go? Coastal North Carolina/South Carolina are hard to beat in the spring. Warming temperatures are complemented by an incredible display of blossoming cherries, azaleas, dogwoods and camellias. The summer heat can be stifling in Charleston, but makes for great family vacations on the beaches of Hilton Head, Outer Banks and Myrtle Beach. Beware of stinging jellyfish in August, the potential for hurricanes from mid July through early November, and heavy weekend traffic between the mainland and barrier islands.

Where to stay? The "Grand Strand" of South Carolina, with Myrtle Beach as the unofficial capital, has become an American "mega" vacation destination, with all the trappings. Hilton Head (SC) and Outer Banks (NC) offer more laid-back alternatives, where condo and house rentals are popular. Charleston is pure charm and one the country's best places for B&B lovers.
|
What to do? The beaches are wide, long and often loaded with great shelling. Myrtle Beach is bustling with theme entertainment. The resort areas of Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach offer great golf, with literally hundreds of championship courses from which to choose. Charleston's historic peninsula area is best experienced on foot or from a horse-drawn carriage.
