When to go? The Cayman Islands have always been one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean between November and April. In 2004, Hurricane Ivan hit the Caymans hard, but as of 2006, most of its tourism infrastructure has been rebuilt. Join the November fun of Pirates Week, when pirates "invade" the island and bring lots of family-friendly activities with them. Other annual events include Batabano Carnival in April, a celebration of music and dance, while June offers multiple fishing tournaments.

Where to stay? Folks who say they're heading to the Cayman Islands usually mean they'll be on Grand Cayman, the largest of the three Islands. Grand Cayman offers plenty of rental properties, including villas and condos. The largest and most popular hotels and resorts are on the Seven Mile Beach strip and book far in advance. Check online for package deals or diving packages.

What to do? Be sure to scuba dive or snorkel the Cayman's vibrant reef life. Above-water, there is plenty of exotic animal life on the island's butterfly farm, the Cayman Turtle farm or at Queen Elizabeth Botanic Park, where you'll find blue iguanas! Grand Cayman's capital, Georgetown, is a well-heeled strip of Western world-class shopping (think Cartier). To witness the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island," island hop to Cayman Brac.
