When to go? The beginning and end of the season (April-May or September-October) are the best times to visit Cape Cod. The weather is warm enough to enjoy all that the Cape offers, but the crowds have gone, leaving you feeling like this little slice of tranquility is yours alone. If possible, plan to arrive on Thursday and leave on Monday. Traffic from week-long vacation rentals can grind to a slow crawl on Route 6 for miles.

Where to stay? While there are plenty of family-friendly hotels and motels at which to stay, the best way to experience Cape Cod is through renting a condo or vacation house. The question then becomes: where on the Cape should you make your homeport? Beaches on the North side of the Cape have cooler water temperatures than those on the South side. The East-facing Outer Cape National Seashore is known for having heavier surf.

What to do? Small towns and historic monuments dot the seaside throughout Cape Cod. A driving tour of the area is a must for first-time visitors. See the old Chatham lighthouse, or drive to the very tip in Provincetown to go whale watching. Most hotels offer coupons with discounts on whale watching trips.
