Brussels Belgium Vacation Travel |
When to go? As the capital of the European Union, Brussels is bustling with business year-round. June is a popular month for Europeans and other tourists to visit here. Belgians themselves - including shop owners - often take their vacations in July and August, so you'll find the city less crowded then. Perhaps your best bet is to plan your vacation in the quieter months of early fall or late spring. Or, if you don't mind the cold, enjoy great hotel rates throughout winter.

Where to stay? With so many business travelers coming through, Brussels' hotels tend to be posh and pricey. Most tourists enjoy staying in one of the art deco hotels close to the Grand Place, one of the finest Squares in Europe - now home to a daily flower mart and concerts by talented street musicians. Apartment or house stays offer a more budget-conscious lodging alternative. If you have time to spare, escape to one of the B&Bs in the Flemish countryside (Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent) - or live like a royal in Luxembourg, where you can stay in your very own chateau (castle)!

What to do? To pay tribute to the mascots of Brussels, you'll need to visit a statue called the Manneken-Pis and say hello to Tin-Tin at the Belgian Comic Strip Center. Art lovers will appreciate the Parc du Cinquantenaire museums, the Belgian Royal Museum of Art, and the antique stores in the Zavel district. For refreshment, enjoy a traditional meal of moules et frites et bières (mussels, French fries and beers) on the Rue des Bouchers. Lastly, no trip to Brussels is complete without indulging in Belgian chocolate or fine pralines.
