Barcelona Spain Vacation Travel |

When to go? While summer in Barcelona is considered peak tourist season, spring and fall are the best times to skip the crowds and enjoy the Mediterranean climate. Because the mountains are nearby, humidity and temperatures drop the further inland you venture. Many Barcelonese take their vacation in August leaving the city to the tourists. At the same time, many Europeans make Barcelona their August vacation destination. Consequently, many hotels, inns and hostels in Barcelona are booked solid during that month.

Where to stay? The Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter) of Barcelona offers many hotels and cheaper hostales built with medieval architecture; stay here for quick access to Les Ramblas and nightlife. The more upscale alternative is the area to the North, known as the Eixample district. These modernista buildings are located in a comparatively safer area of town with plenty of the restaurants for which Barcelona is known. While Plaza Espanya's hotels are nice and conveniently near the airport, only stay in the area the night of your arrival or before your departure, as it is too far from the city center to be used as a base for tourist activities.

What to do? Spend time on the quiet Muntanye De Montjuic or walking between the neighborhoods in the narrow, winding streets of the old town (Ciutat Vella), take in the fabulous museums and cathedrals (Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, Les Ramblas and Picasso's Museum), and feast on seafood and tapas. But don't come here looking for flamenco music or bullfighting; Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, has its own traditions, culture and dialect that differ from the rest of Spain.
